DrumSynth Lab User Guide

Welcome to DrumSynth Lab — a drum sound synthesizer that allows you to create and customize a wide range of drum sounds.

DrumSynth Lab is a drum sound synthesizer that allows you to create and customize a wide range of drum sounds. Built using the MIT-licensed source code from Paul Kennet, it offers a simple yet powerful interface for generating high-quality percussive tones ideal for music production, beat-making, or live performance.

About DrumSynth Lab

DrumSynth Lab provides a modular approach to sound design, allowing users to combine various modules to craft unique drum sounds. Each module focuses on a specific aspect of sound synthesis, such as tone generation, noise shaping, distortion, and filtering. The application is designed to be intuitive and flexible, enabling both beginners and advanced users to explore creative possibilities.

Modules in DrumSynth Lab

DrumSynth Lab consists of several modules, each responsible for different aspects of sound synthesis. Here’s a list of the main modules:

  • General Module: Master processor for global adjustments like level, tuning, stretch, filtering, and resonance.
  • Tone Module: Controls parameters like level, frequency, phase, and decay to generate harmonic tones.
  • Overtones Module: Combines two waveforms to create rich harmonic structures with adjustable frequencies and algorithms.
  • Noise Module: Generates white noise with adjustable level and slope.
  • NoiseBand Module: Produces band-limited noise with an envelope, useful for percussive sounds.
  • Distortion Module: Applies clipping, bit reduction, and sample rate reduction to add grit and character to your sounds.

Each module can be enabled or disabled individually, allowing you to build complex sounds by layering multiple effects.

User Interface Overview

DrumSynth Lab User Interface

The user interface of DrumSynth Lab is divided into several sections, making it easy to navigate and control various aspects of sound synthesis:

1. Menu Bar

The top menu bar contains essential controls:

  • New: Create a new preset.
  • Open: Load an existing preset.
  • Save: Save your current settings.
  • Help: Access documentation and support resources.
  • Minimize/Maximize/Close: Standard window controls.

2. Preset Browser

The left sidebar serves as a preset browser, allowing you to organize and load presets:

  • Folders: Organize presets into categories (e.g., Acoustic, Bass, Cr78, etc.).
  • Search: Quickly find presets using the search bar at the top.

3. Main Workspace

The central area displays the waveform visualization of the current sound:

  • Waveform Display: Shows the amplitude over time, helping you visualize the sound’s dynamics.

4. Modules Panel

The bottom section contains all active modules, each with its own set of controls:

  • Master Section: Global controls affecting all modules (Level, Tuning, Stretch, Filter, HP, Resonance).
  • Tone Module: Adjusts parameters like Level, Freq1, Freq2, Droop, and Phase.
  • Noise Band Module: Controls Noise Band parameters.
  • Distortion Module: Applies distortion effects.
  • Other Modules: Additional modules like Overtones, Noise, etc., can be added and configured.

Each module has its own set of sliders and switches, allowing precise control over the sound.

5. Module Activation

On the right side of each module, there are toggle switches to enable or disable individual modules. This lets you quickly turn modules on or off without losing their settings.
