Distortion Module User Guide

Learn how to apply distortion effects to your sounds by adjusting clipping levels, bit reduction, and sample rate reduction.

What is the Distortion Module?

The Distortion module applies various types of audio distortion to your sound. Distortion is a creative effect that can add warmth, grit, or harshness to your audio. You can control the amount of clipping, reduce the bit depth, and lower the sample rate to achieve different distortion characteristics.

How to Use the Distortion Module

1. Main Interface

The Distortion module consists of three controls:

  • Clipping: Controls the amount of signal clipping, which adds harmonic distortion. Range: 0 dB – 60 dB. Default: 0 dB.
  • Bits: Reduces the bit depth of the audio signal, creating a lo-fi effect. Options: none, 14 bit, 12 bit, 10 bit, 8 bit, 6 bit, 4 bit, 2 bit. Default: none.
  • Rate: Lowers the sample rate of the audio signal, creating aliasing and further lo-fi artifacts. Options: none, 11 kHz, 7 kHz, 5 kHz, 4 kHz, 3 kHz, 2 kHz, 1 kHz. Default: none.

2. How to Adjust Parameters

  1. Find the desired control (e.g., Clipping, Bits, or Rate).
  2. For sliders, click and drag to adjust the value.
  3. For dropdown menus, click to open the list and select an option.
  4. Release the slider or confirm your selection to apply changes.
  5. After finishing adjustments, the distorted sound will automatically play with the new settings.

3. Tooltips on Hover

If you hover over any control, the program may display a tooltip or additional information about the parameter. This helps you better understand how each control works.

Tips for Using the Distortion Module

Add Warmth with Clipping: Increase the Clipping parameter slightly (e.g., 10–20 dB) to add subtle harmonic distortion, making the sound warmer and richer.

Create Lo-Fi Effects: Use the Bits and Rate controls together to create retro or lo-fi sounds. For example, set Bits to 8 bit and Rate to 5 kHz for a vintage game console-like sound.

Experiment with Extreme Settings: Push the Clipping to 60 dB, Bits to 2 bit, and Rate to 1 kHz for an aggressive, heavily distorted sound.

Combine with Other Modules: Use the Distortion module alongside other modules like Tone or NoiseBand to add texture and character to your sounds.

Example Usage

  1. Set Clipping to 30 dB to introduce moderate distortion.
  2. Select Bits as “8 bit” to reduce the bit depth and create a gritty, digital sound.
  3. Select Rate as “5 kHz” to lower the sample rate and add aliasing artifacts.
  4. Release the controls and listen to the result. Notice how the sound becomes harsher and more lo-fi.
  5. Experiment by lowering Clipping to 10 dB and increasing Rate to “11 kHz” to hear how the distortion changes.

Possible Issues and Solutions

  • No Effect: Ensure that at least one parameter (Clipping, Bits, or Rate) is adjusted away from its default value.
  • Sound is Too Harsh: Lower the Clipping value or choose higher bit depths and sample rates to reduce distortion intensity.
  • Sound Doesn’t Change: Make sure you release the slider or confirm selections after making adjustments.
