Learn how to adjust parameters to generate and shape band-limited noise with an envelope.

What is the NoiseBand Module?

The NoiseBand module generates band-limited noise, which is noise constrained to a specific frequency range. The generated signal also includes an envelope, which shapes the amplitude of the sound over time. This makes it ideal for creating percussive sounds like kicks, snares, or hi-hats.

How to Use the NoiseBand Module

1. Main Interface

The NoiseBand module consists of three sliders that allow you to control the following parameters:

  • Level: Controls the overall volume of the noise. Range: 0% – 200%. Default: 128%.
  • Freq: Sets the center frequency of the noise band. Range: 30 Hz – 22050 Hz. Default: 300 Hz.
  • DF (Frequency Spread): Adjusts the width of the frequency band around the center frequency. Higher values create a wider band of frequencies. Range: 0% – 50%. Default: 0%.

2. Envelope Behavior

The generated noise signal has an envelope applied to it. The envelope controls how the sound evolves over time, shaping its attack, decay, and release. This makes the noise more dynamic and suitable for percussion-like sounds.

3. How to Adjust Parameters

  1. Find the desired slider (e.g., Level, Freq, or DF).
  2. Click and drag the slider to adjust the value.
  3. Release the slider to apply changes.
  4. After finishing adjustments, the sound will automatically play with the new settings.

4. Tooltips on Hover

If you hover over any slider, the program may display a tooltip or additional information about the parameter. This helps you better understand how each slider works.

Tips for Using the NoiseBand Module

Create Percussive Sounds: Use a low Freq value (e.g., 100 Hz) and a narrow DF to simulate kick drum-like sounds.

Create Hi-Hat Sounds: Set Freq to a high value (e.g., 5000 Hz) and increase DF slightly to simulate metallic hi-hat sounds.

Adjust Volume Carefully: The Level parameter controls the overall volume. Be cautious when increasing it to avoid clipping or distortion.

Experiment with Frequency Spread: Increase DF to make the noise sound richer and less focused, or decrease it for a tighter, more defined sound.

Example Usage

  1. Set Level to 150% to make the noise louder.
  2. Set Freq to 1000 Hz to define the center frequency of the noise band.
  3. Set DF to 10% to add some frequency spread around the center frequency.
  4. Release the sliders and listen to the result. Notice how the envelope shapes the sound dynamically.
  5. Experiment by lowering Freq to 200 Hz and increasing DF to 20% to hear how the sound changes.

Possible Issues and Solutions

  • No Sound: Ensure that the Level parameter is set above 0%.
  • Sound is Too Harsh: Lower the Level or reduce DF to tighten the frequency range.
  • Sound Doesn’t Change: Make sure you release the slider after making adjustments.
