Overtones Module User Guide

Learn how to adjust sound parameters to create rich and complex overtones.

What is the Overtones Module?

The Overtones module allows you to generate and manipulate harmonics (overtones) by combining two waveforms. You can adjust frequencies, wave types, mixing ratios, and algorithms to create unique sounds.

How to Use the Overtones Module

1. Main Interface

The Overtones module consists of sliders, dropdown menus, and other controls. Below are all available parameters:

  • Level: Controls overall sound volume. Range: 0% – 200%. Default: 128%.
  • Freq 1: Base frequency of the first waveform. Range: 20 Hz – 22050 Hz. Default: 200 Hz.
  • Freq 2: Base frequency of the second waveform. Range: 20 Hz – 22050 Hz. Default: 120 Hz.
  • Wave 1: Selects the waveform type for the first oscillator. Options: Sine, Sine?, Tri, Saw, Square.
  • Wave 2: Selects the waveform type for the second oscillator. Options: Sine, Sine?, Tri, Saw, Square.
  • Algorithm: Defines how the two waveforms interact:
    • A+B: Adds the two waveforms together.
    • A.B (Freq Modulation): Frequency modulation between the two waveforms.
    • AxB (Ring Modulation): Ring modulation between the two waveforms.
    • A…B (Cymbal Tones): Creates cymbal-like tones.
  • Mix: Controls the balance between the two waveforms. Range: 0% – 100%. Default: 50%.
  • Tracking: Adjusts pitch tracking for the waveforms. Options: OFF, Wave 1, Wave 2, Both.

2. How to Adjust Parameters

  1. Find the desired control (e.g., Level or Freq 1).
  2. For sliders, click and drag to adjust the value.
  3. For dropdown menus, click to open the list and select an option.
  4. Release the slider or confirm your selection to apply changes.
  5. After finishing adjustments, the sound will automatically play with the new settings.

3. Tooltips on Hover

If you hover over any control, the program may display a tooltip or additional information about the parameter. This helps you better understand how each control works.

Tips for Using the Overtones Module

Experiment with Waveforms! Try different combinations of Wave 1 and Wave 2 to create unique sounds. For example, pairing a sine wave with a square wave can produce interesting results.

Use Algorithms: The Algorithm dropdown defines how the two waveforms interact. Experiment with options like A.B (Freq Modulation) for metallic tones or A…B (Cymbal Tones) for percussive effects.

Balancing Mix: The Mix slider controls the balance between the two waveforms. Adjust it to emphasize one waveform over the other.

Example Usage

  1. Set Level to 150% to make the sound louder.
  2. Select Sine for Wave 1 and Square for Wave 2.
  3. Set Freq 1 to 440 Hz and Freq 2 to 660 Hz.
  4. Choose A.B (Freq Modulation) from the Algorithm dropdown.
  5. Adjust Mix to 75% to emphasize the second waveform.
  6. Enable Tracking by selecting Both.
  7. Release the controls and listen to the result.

Possible Issues and Solutions

  • No Sound: Ensure that the Level parameter is set above 0%.
  • Sound is Too Harsh: Try using smoother waveforms like Sine or Tri instead of Saw or Square.
  • Sound Doesn’t Change: Make sure you release sliders or confirm selections after making adjustments.
